Note | Sotheby: “red morocco super extra, doublé with olive morocco, richly gilt-tooled in an elegant Grolier design, g.e. by Chambolle-Duru,
with the Seillière arms, in a neat case. This book was discovered at Ferrara by M. Tross, and is the only copy of the first
edition of Amadis known to exist. For a full description of the volume see Brunet, Supplement, col. 31, where it is valued
at five or six thousand francs, and perhaps more--or about £250” Quaritch 1895:8-9: “red morocco super extra, doublé with olive morocco, richly gilt-tooled in an elegant Grolier design, gilt edges, by Marius-Michel and Chambolle-Duru, with the Seillière arms on the sides; in a neat case. … Unique. The first edition of the famous Amadis was utterly unknown till this single copy was discovered at Ferrara in 1872, and sold by Tross to Baron Seillière for 10,000 fr.” |
